My Henna Journey

I discovered henna on the Big Island of Hawaii back in 2003, and I've been exploring the art of adornment ever since. I moved back to Boulder, Colorado and in December of 2007 I began the Blessed Belly art project. I began painting pregnant women, and this practice has brought out the best in me. What follows is a glimpse of my recent artwork.

More Art Than I've Ever Painted

I feel so grateful for all that this art project has brought out of me. Being around so many awesome pregnant and postpartum women - 14 this month - has been so healing and fun. Thank you so much for your appreciation and encouragement, it has propelled me to do more art this month than I ever have in my whole life.

In addition to painting with henna, I also draw with a ball point pen, doodling on letters to my pen pal. I'm art-working on a henna design book in addition to the book Blessed Belly Blessed Baby: Honoring Motherhood with Henna Tattoos.

I drew this for the 3rd Grade Calendar Contest and won. Drawing is something I've enjoyed for a long time, consistently practicing week after week. When people ask me how I got to be where I am today with art, I show them this picture. Practice, practice, practice.

I really made the leap in drawing after I read the books Drawing on the Right side of the Brain and The Artist's Way. They changed the course of my artistic life dramatically.
